White Noise

It always seems like Hollywood takes a really cool phenomenon and twists it out of control. Now while I’ve never seen this film I can probably say that they’ve taken this concept and demonized it.

For those of you who don’t know, in the paranormal world “white noise” is essentially ghost voices on audio tape. It is known as EVP, or “electronic voice phenomena.” It is truly quite disturbing actually, it gives me the chills.

There are tons of websites with audio claiming to have voices on it. There are definitely a few fakes out there but some of them are unexplainable and clear as day. It gives me definite chills to hear some of these clips; however, the power of suggestion is very prevalent in these websites. In most, if not all cases, the site will tell you what you are supposed to hear before you click on the file to listen and naturally you hear what they told you. There are a lot of EVP recordings that seem to be indistinguishable if it weren’t for the text description of what others think they hear.

When you’re looking around the web for information on EVP, a good place to start would be the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena (http://aaevp.com/). You would actually think this is a great place to start but it looks ore like a business than an actual resource – nonetheless, surf around and find some info before moving on.

I found a website titled “All About Ghosts” with an article regarding EVP: http://dawghouse.topcities.com/evp.html. First of all they have a lot of valid off-site links and also have quite a collection of audio clips. As far as finding audio clips on the web, you’ll run into a lot of the same ones on different sites. This site, http://www.mcmsys.com/%7ebrammer/ourbest.htm, has quite a few of the common recordings that have been circulating along with some good descriptions of where and when they were recorded. http://www.armageddononline.org/electronic_voice_phenomenon.php explains a little more in depth about the scientific aspects of EVP.

Of course this wouldn’t be complete without discussing the hoax factor of this. I hear a lot of recordings that sound so clear that I think they’re hoaxes, but since I don’t know a tremendous amount about EVP, I can’t say if they are real or not. Adam Briggs, http://www.angelfire.com/electronic2/a_briggs/, looked at EVP using a piece of software that he downloaded, convinced that most EVP recordings were hoaxes. His story is pretty interesting, but it doesn’t dive too deep into the hoax factor because he claims to have recorded eerie things with this software. Check out his site; he claims to have asked questions out loud and recorded definite responses, spooky indeed.

The Toronto Ghosts and Hauntings Research Society has a page (http://www.torontoghosts.org/evphowto.htm) on their site discussing the ins and outs of recording voice on tape with a small snippet about digital audio versus analog audio. This is where the major hoax factor comes in because with digital audio, once it’s dumped from the recording device to your computer you are open to scrutiny. The writer says it best like this:
“The way I say it to people is imagine you have been charged with a murder. The only evidence that you did it is a DIGITAL image from someone's camera dumped on to a computer. Would you not see the fallacy of this in your own defence?”

In closing to this article I will give my statement regarding the issue. There are some things that cannot be explained with science and sometimes there are no logical answers to questions like these. Indeed I believe that there are spirits among us; however, I will never understand until I reach the other side myself, nor will anyone else. Perhaps they exist not knowing that they have passed on and assume life as usual, but I can never know this. I definitely think that there are hoax audio samples out there, but there are some that people swear are real and unmistakable.

There should be something in this space.

But there isn't. Does this void bother you?

I like this block here on the side, it's very web 2.0.
